Directory submission of your websites helps search engines, especially Google to maintain complete record of your website and index it in their search results. If your website is not properly indexed by Google then you are likely to miss a lot of traffic from those who might be searching for you over Internet but couldn’t find you.
Directory submission is also an essential step for SEO as it generates backlinks from the directories and also its viewable by thousands of people which creates potential for driving more traffic to your website and advertising them in a better way.

Directory submissions is useful for seo but not necessary. Local businesses with or without website can benefit from it as they are easily found by people who wants to know about their services or products.

I think it has it's ups and downs, first is that you have some people who love to read articles while others just doesn't care. Directory submissions can be helpful to your SEO campaign if your article is a particular interest to a certain group, lets say biology students, the problem is that you can't determine whether or not they will click on the link in your article to redirect them to your site. So it's 50-50 I guess.

Yes building one way backlinks from directory sites is still useful, but building backlinks from high page rank & domain authority & do-follow sites will be always helpful.

Directory submissions are a very powerful tool.

As with everything in SEO relevance is of the up most importance. So stick to submitting your website to directories that are related to your industry.

As a general rule of thumb, I try and stay away from directories that mention the the words SEO or page rank etc, that is unless I am working on a SEO related site.

Directory submission is an off page seo technique in which you can submit your site url to another sites and get backlinks from there. It increase traffic, visitors and also improve your search engine results. If the site are do-follow and having high PR then it will be much more beneficial.
